Building Lives Training Academy

Our commitment to invest in the communities we serve isn’t just lip service. Look no further than iconic Arlington House, in Camden, where Lakehouse has set up its first Building Lives Training Academy, a social enterprise that brings in the expertise of the private and public sector to provide training and employment opportunities for disadvantaged people.

The academy, officially opened by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, is a registered Community Interest Company, which will eventually be used as an instrument to employ and train residents on Lakehouse projects as well as involve residents in the governance of the business. It is Lakehouse CEO Steve Rawling's vision to open more training academies over the next two years, and “offer London a ‘Big Society’ solution to overcoming worklessness and poverty.”

Thanks to the investment of £12.8million from Communities and Local Government under the Hostels Capital Improvement Programme, the hostel has recently undergone a huge transformation. The scheme and stunning new building, modelled on New York City’s Times Square project, now provide 3000m2 of social enterprise and training space, together with 35 flats for intermediate rent and 95 high quality units for homeless people.

Winner of 'Diversity Champion of the Year' at Building Awards 2011, 'Economic Regeneration' at the Lord Mayor's Dragon Awards 2011, and 'Contractor of the Year' at Building Awards 2010.
