Construction Diploma Site Tours

As part of our work within the education sector Lakehouse provides tours of its sites to students undertaking the new Construction Diploma. One of these tours involved teaming up with Kent County Council and Thomas Ford & Partners Architects to provide a tour of the Gravesend Old Town Hall, which has not been used for eight years. Lakehouse is responsible for its £3M refurbishment and conversion into a cafe and incubator units for arts and crafts and new local businesses.

Construction GCSE students from Fulston Manor School, Sittingbourne, were shown around the listed building by professionals from Lakehouse and Thomas Ford. The aim was to raise awareness of how a project works on site and to increase students' knowledge of trade and professional careers within a heritage environment. This included a historical explanation of how certain trades have developed and how the history of a building affects its use and evolution.

The building is known as Gravesend Old Town Hall despite being used as a magistrate's court since that time. The students were keen to hear of the origins of "take them down" and were literally taken down the steps to see the old police cells, which are set to become cafe rooms. Lakehouse ended the successful tour with a presentation on careers and opportunities in construction.
