Swale schools take on Olympic Build Challenge

On 31 March 2009 Lakehouse joined forces with Kent Works and ConstructionSkills to provide an uplifting, fun filled event at Wyvern Hall, Sittingbourne. Students from six Swale schools were inspired to design and build their own Olympic stadiums as part of a 'Big Build Challenge'. Two teams from each school battled it out to construct stadiums made from rods of newspaper, using a stix machine.

Each group was assigned a mentor from the construction industry and the students discussed their ideas and agreed designs before actually creating the stadiums of their dreams. Marion Ward of Kent Works, the main organiser, said "There are around 100 students here today from 6 different Swale schools and it's great seeing them get on so well together. We have design, engineering and construction students here and with the support of our business ambassadors they are getting a real taste of these industries."

All the students worked hard, producing some fantastic designs but there was one outstanding entry from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School - an Octopus Swimming Arena, shown here.
