On 5th February 2009 Lakehouse teamed up with Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP) and Richmond Council to offer students from Orleans Park School, Twickenham, an opportunity to find out more about the construction industry. The enterprise and business day was a fun and informative way to demonstrate the benefits of working in the industry and enabled us to promote the career opportunities available.
Based at one of Lakehouse's sites where Decent Homes work is being undertaken for tenants of RHP, this successful session was lead by Site Manager, John Bennett. Around fifteen students were provided with the contract brief which was followed by a site tour and an explanation of how a site is set up. The group was then split into teams to carry out the following activities:
- Make wet paint signboards for external decoration works. Students were shown how to hinge plywood boards together and apply paint.
- Repair broken paving slabs - students carried out the preparation work required for laying of slabs. This involved shovelling the sand in, tamping it down and levelling it off. The students were shown how to point the slabs.
To give the group an opportunity to show their creative side Lakehouse provided boards and challenged the students to design new site signage. Their signs were fixed to heras fencing and displayed around the site office, and the worthy winner was rewarded with some vouchers.
