RIBA Awards 2010 - Lowther Children's Centre
Lowther Children's Centre is one of 101 buildings to be recognised with a RIBA Award, given for buildings that have high architectural standards and make a substantial contribution to the local environment. Lowther was also shortlisted for the London Building of the Year Special Award. The building is one of only five projects in Greater London to have received a Civic Trust Award.
Lakehouse completed the £1.4million project in 2009, replacing an ageing nursery building with a one storey extension, which is expected to achieve a BREEAM rating of 'Excellent'. The centre was designed to be a champion of sustainability in the broadest sense. A holistic approach to sustainability was undertaken, which goes further than simply using green materials and reducing carbon emissions.
The green technologies that have been introduced were designed to be on show and to be interacted with, to become a learning tool for the children, as well as creating more stimulating and sensory spaces and experiences.
