Abbey Sure Start Children’s Centre, Barking
Lakehouse was delighted to construct the £1.1M Abbey Sure Start Children’s Centre, for the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, which was designed to reflect the maritime history of the local area.
The Civic Trust Awards are presented to projects of the highest quality design. The Abbey Sure Start Centre was commended in 2006 for making a valuable and positive contribution to the local environment.
The striking single storey, L-shaped building sits in an area of disjointed architecture, creating something of a focal point and includes a day nursery, local Sure Start offices, and multi-cultural community facilities and crèche. Rather than hiding behind a defensible wall, the exterior of the building, stained black, with bright primary coloured shutters, forms the boundary and curves round to shelter the nursery garden.
Vivienne Newlands, Civic Trust Awards Manager, said: "Judging for the Civic Trust Awards relies on examining the context - it is particular to each place and each building. Every new development could be a winner, if it is high quality design and also has a positive community impact.”
