Southend Borough Council has awarded Lakehouse a £1.97million contract for the extension and reconfiguration of Barons Court Infant School and Nursery, Westcliff-on-Sea. The school, located in an area of relative deprivation, is the smallest mainstream school in the borough and has the highest per pupil funding of any primary school in the borough. The expansion will make the school more cost effective and provide much needed additional primary school places.
The 60 week project comprises the construction of a two-storey steel framed extension to the existing school building and has been designed to achieve a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good'. Sustainable elements include timber cladding, improvements to the existing wildlife pond and installation of a green wall adjacent to the new school entrance.
Work is expected to start later this month and will be undertaken in three phases so that the school can remain operational.
