John Perry Children's Centre and Nursery, Dagenham
Client: Children’s Services, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Lakehouse was delighted to have been awarded the £1.1M project to build the highly innovative single-storey John Perry Children’s Centre and Nursery, within the grounds of the existing Primary School.
The nursery element of the Children’s Centre forms a fourth wall, enclosing an existing courtyard and creating an outdoor teaching area, which connects the children fully to nature and daylight. Imaginative use of soft play external facilities has been combined with stunning mirrored sculptures and grassed mounds.
The steel and timber-framed structure incorporated brick cladding, under floor heating, aluminium cladding and roofing with aluminium windows.
Judges said: “The centre shows how collaborative working, and rethinking how a school and children’s centre could work together, can produce a refreshing local landmark”.
The project was also awarded Local Authority Award by the British Construction Industry in 2006.
