Camden's Building Quality Awards 2009 focus on the quality of construction and the construction process rather than the design aspects of the built environment. Lakehouse's new build project at Mathilda Marks-Kennedy School is considered to be an excellent example of construction and was nominated by Robert Truman, Building Control Officer for Camden Council.
The new foundation unit is the first phase of renovation of the whole school. The building is fully accessible and through the sunken roof construction with a glazed roof, benefits from rain water harvesting, natural lighting and ventilation into an interactive open space. Incorporating teaching spaces, wet areas and staff facilities the building's layout is spacious and flexible, allowing areas to be partitioned off to meet the school's needs. Access to the external spaces is incorporated into the building design with a view to connect to a future extension, ensuring the building links to the main school.
A comprehensive marking system was used to review compliance against a number of criteria including the Building Regulations, site management and environmental issues. Lakehouse's Sales Director, Paul King, was delighted to accept the Building Quality Award on 16 July at a ceremony held at the Building Centre, Store Street, which has over 75 years' experience in providing information on design and architecture and building construction. Kathy MacEwan, born and brought up in Camden, was there to congratulate the winners. Kathy is Head of Design Review and Planning at CABE, the government's advisor on architecture, urban design and public space.
